The evolution of tall buildings since the early twentieth century provides a paradigmatic study in the combinatorial evolution of technology, creating a series of distinctive building typologies through time indicative of self-producing systems in both Maturana and Varela’s meaning of the term and Arthur’s theory.65 As it evolves from its mono-functional origins to its more recent multifunctional variations, so the type also reflects parallel changes in the evolution of modern city centers themselves, from their single-purpose, central business districts (or CBDs) to the increasingly diverse cluster of activities, including residential, entertainment and retail functions, which typify the livelier cities of today.
